World Cup Stories: Italy 1934

By Eduardo Mendoza

ITALY 1934

The FIFA Congress held in Stockholm on 13 May 1932 awarded Italy the title of host of the second World Cup. The other candidate, Sweden, withdrew when the delegates' preferences leaned towards the Italian candidacy. After the nomination of the Italians, there were some moments of uncertainty, as the head of the Italian delegation, Giovanni Mauro, asked for a deadline to give a definitive answer, once he had confirmed that the FIGC - Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio - had the support of the government. This request led the Austrian delegate to oppose such a deadline and also to propose that the tournament be postponed until 1936, arguing financial problems, a proposal that was rejected. A few days after the close of the Congress, FIFA received confirmation from the Italians that they had the support of the government and that they could therefore commit to holding the World Cup. Thus, at the meeting on October 8 of the same year, Italy was confirmed as the host country for the championship.

The Italian government, led by Benito Mussolini, appointed General Giorgio Vaccaro, a prominent figure of the fascist party and president of the FIGC, as head of the organizing committee. Vaccaro had the full support of the government. To raise funds, the National Lottery was organized. Mussolini ordered the modernization of the stadiums and the transportation system using fascist youth organizations. In the football part, the Italians were “reinforced” with several Argentine players (some of them runners-up in the world championship in 1930), although along the way they lost their first-choice goalkeeper Carlo Cerisioli.

On May 22, 1933, the first qualifying rounds in the history of the World Cup were held in Paris. Italy, the host country for the only time in the history of the World Cup, had to go out against Greece. The Italians easily defeated the Greeks (4:0) in the first match, after which the Hellenes withdrew, claiming a lost cause..

Meanwhile, Mexico had to travel to Rome to decide its qualification in a single match against the United States, who registered at the last minute. The Aztec team had already achieved its qualification after beating Cuba in a series of three matches held in Mexico City; however, William Campbell, who served as FIFA delegate in the region, managed to convince the organization to accept the American request. The game, which took place three days before the start of the championship, was won by the Americans 4-2, with four goals scored by the only professional player (in American football) in the match, Aldo “Buff” Donelli. After the game, the Mexicans, who did not expect to be eliminated, were stranded and without money to return to their country, so they had to play a series of friendly matches in some European countries to raise funds to be able to return. There were no surprises for the rest and those who were thought to qualify a priori, qualified.

Uruguay, the previous champion, refused to participate in response to the European federations' boycott of the World Cup held in its country four years earlier. Meanwhile, two other South American participants in the previous edition, Paraguay and Bolivia, did not participate because they were involved in a bloody war over the Chaco region.

In South America, the introduction of professionalism had diminished the strength of the national teams, since the best players had moved to professional clubs that were not under the jurisdiction of the various federations, which made them ineligible to join the national teams. This, and the scarcity of international matches, had meant that the South American teams did not have the strength they had four years earlier. Argentina, interested in organizing the 1938 World Cup, sent a team from the Argentine Association of Amateur Football, since the professional teams were in the Argentine Football League, a dissident association not recognized by FIFA, which meant that its players were not eligible for the World Cup. Just two weeks before embarking for Europe on the Neptunia, the Italian coach Felipe Pascucci gathered the squad in Buenos Aires and began training. In Brazil, on the other hand, there was an internal fight between the amateur CBD and the FBF (Brazilian Football Federation) that controlled professional football. The CBD insisted that the team be made up of amateur players, which excluded the best in the country who had converted to professional football, but shortly before the tournament it entered into negotiations directly with the professional players, offering them payments that were much higher than what their clubs paid them. The Amazonians left on May 12 at the Conte Biancamano.

In the north of the continent, after their success in the previous World Cup, the United States had not played any international match since 1930, and their professional league had disappeared due to the crisis caused by the Great Depression of 1929, so they arrived with an amateur team that lacked experience but was very enthusiastic. The USFA was slow to apply to compete in the 1934 World Cup, but FIFA eventually agreed on the condition that they would have to play a single qualifying match against the winner of the North American and Caribbean qualifying round, which turned out to be Mexico. The location of the qualifying match would be in Rome a few days before the start of the World Cup.

Meanwhile in Europe, the Spaniards played three friendly matches against the English team Sunderland as preparation but had many absences, first the goalkeeper Guillermo Eizaguerra (who ended up accompanying the delegation as a tourist) who fractured his arm in a friendly, then the defender Pedro Peña was also injured and Pedro Regueiro could not travel because he was undergoing exams. The delegation left Barcelona on May 24 on the Conte Biancamano ship (where the Brazilians were also traveling) bound for Genoa.

The Austrian Wunderteam traveled to Italy as one of the clear favorites, but they arrived depleted since their best players were already playing abroad and were not available for the national coach, others were absent due to injury such as Walter Nausch who did not recover from the qualifying match against Bulgaria.

The Belgian team also arrived with absences such as Stanley Vanden Eynde, nor did they count on Raymond Braine who played abroad so they did not have many chances of success.

The Germans, for their part, had shortlisted 38 players, and after playing a series of matches against the English team Derby County, they reduced the list to 18 players who initially made the trip to Italy. The average age of their team was 24 years old, making it the youngest German team in a World Cup so far.

During the two weeks prior to the start of the World Cup, the French team prepared in the forest of Compiègne under the direction of the Englishman George Kimpton. All their players were professionals, but eight of them played for second division teams.

After being defeated by the Egyptians at the 1924 Olympic Games and their non-attendance at the 1930 World Cup, the Hungarians were also marked as favourites; However, due to complaints from journalists and fans, the Hungarian team changed several players a few days before leaving for the tournament. Somlai replaced János Móré, Gyula Polgár replaced József Turay and Sandor Biró replaced Rezső Rozgonyi, although Gyula Polgar and Gyorgy Sarosi (the latter undergoing examinations) joined the team after the match against Egypt.

The Swiss' preparations were complicated by the refusal of the Servette team to release players, as they were facing Grasshoppers in the Swiss Cup final. But in the end, Servette backed down under threat of sanctions.

The Dutch met on 21 May in Arnhem to travel by train to Italy the following day. They stayed near Como at the Regina Olga hotel, where the players complained of boredom.

The Romanians arrived at the World Cup without many expectations, but to make matters worse their star player Silviu Bindea arrived injured, his replacement Zoltan Beke was not registered and could not play against the Czechs, a situation that was heavily criticised by the Romanian press, also Iulio Barataky was ineligible as he had previously played for the Hungarian national team, but FIFA postponed the case until after the World Cup.

The first African team to participate in a World Cup was Egypt but the conditions were not favourable for them as the federation decided not to suspend the local championship until 12 May leaving few days to prepare. Finally they travelled to Italy on the Teveret ship to reach Naples, in the last matches of the local championship the defender Ibrahim Halim was injured, although he travelled with the squad he did not manage to recover and could not play against Hungary.

In the first round of the tournament, the Hungarians beat Egypt, which meant revenge for the Magyars, since the Africans had beaten them (3-0) in the 1924 Olympic Tournament; Germany recovered from an early disadvantage and ended up easily dominating the Belgians; the Austrian Wünderteam needed extra time to beat a brave France (Austria took the lead with a goal by Schall who was in an offside position, a fact that the player himself would later admit); Italy defeated the United States without hesitation (7-1). Czechoslovakia and Switzerland were very lucky to beat Romania (2-1) and Holland (3-2), respectively. The Romanians hit the crossbar at the end of the match, while the Dutch had a goal disallowed from a free kick because the referee blew the final whistle before the ball crossed the goal line.

The South American representatives were quickly defeated. Argentina, despite playing a great game, fell 2-3 to Sweden, and Brazil, which showed the world its two great talents, Waldemar and Leonidas, had no chance against a superior Spain and lost 1-3.

The second round was marked by the two matches between Spain and Italy, although some historians say that the best match of this round was that between the Czechoslovaks and the Swiss, won by the former 3-2. Spain, considered by many to be the best team in the tournament, faced Italy, the host country, and fell after two matches that were characterized more by excessive violence and partial refereeing than by good football. On the way to the final, Czechoslovakia got rid of Germany (3-1) and Italy, in a tight and lackluster match, beat Austria 1-0. The final, on the other hand, was a great game in which the Azzurri came from behind to beat an excellent Czechoslovakian team and thus lift their first World Cup.

INTERESTING FACTS AND OTHER INTERESTING FACTS

- Italian striker Luigi Bertolini played in the Cup with a head injury. The player, considered one of the best headers in Europe, justified the use of a headgear by saying that the stitching on the ball hurt his head.

- The Italian players received 1,725 dollars each, as a prize for having won the title.

- The Italian coach, Vitorio Pozzo, dedicated his team's victory over Spain to the fascist regime by saying: “Men of special temperament were needed to beat them, strong and reliable men as only fascism can create...”

- For this Cup, long-sleeved shirts continued to be used, some countries incorporated the national emblem.

- This was the first World Cup to be broadcast on the radio.

- About Monti, Donelli would say in the book “US Soccer vs the World”: “Monti, I can still remember him. He was on top of me... as I had scored four goals against Mexico, Monti never left me alone.”

- the match between Italy and Spain was predicted to be a great match and it was. At the end of the 120' the score was tied at 1-1, so a play-off match was necessary, according to some because nobody knew how to resolve the situation. If there was one thing that both matches had in common, it was the violence and the partiality of the referees in favour of the Italians. After the end of both matches, both teams had suffered numerous casualties (15 in total; 11 in the first match, 7 Spaniards and 4 Italians; 4 in the second, all Spanish), But the referee's partiality was not limited to just turning a blind eye to the violence. In the first match, the Belgian Baert validated the equalising goal, scored by Ferrari while Schiavio held Zamora's arms. Mercet was not far behind in the tiebreaker, validating the Italian goal, scored by Meazza taking advantage of Demaria obstructing Nogues, and disallowing two legitimate goals for Spain.

- Due to the scandalous nature of his refereeing, Mercet were expelled from FIFA, and was also banned for life by the Swiss Federation.

- The Brazilian club Palestra Italia (now Palmeiras) concentrated its players in a farm, which was guarded by armed guards, in order to avoid the call-up of its players to the national team. Palestra Italia decided to change its name to Palmeiras to demonstrate its disagreement with Mussolini's policy.

- The Argentine Luis Monti experienced the other side of the coin in this World Cup, from villain after the final in Montevideo four years ago, to hero after the one in Rome. Years later he would refer to it: "My destiny is incomprehensible, in Uruguay they wanted to kill me if I won, in Italy if I didn't... they announced to us that by decision of the Duce, we could ask for whatever we wanted, if we won the final... We were the privileged human beings of Italy... Then everything was going to change... I remember Guaita, then pampered by the same fascist leaders who some time later wanted to send him to the war in Abyssinia... He had to flee Italy because he played for Roma, the rival club of Lazio, Mussolini's favourite (team). In order to weaken Roma, the fascist bosses decided overnight to send all their players to the front. Guaita, who like me, Orsi and Demaria had helped Italy to become world champions, had to flee to save themselves. With Scopelli they arrived in France and disappeared...”

- After Spain's victory over Brazil, a newspaper from the Basque provinces on the Iberian Peninsula ran a full-page headline: “Ten Basques and Zamora beat Brazil.”

- It is said that when the Italian players greeted Mussolini before the final, the Czechoslovakian goalkeeper, Plánička, mocked in a low voice: “Hail Caesar, those who are going to die salute you.”

- One day before the final, Mussolini gave a message of “encouragement” to the Italian players: “Gentlemen, if the Czechs are correct, we are correct. That above all. But if they want to beat us by being arrogant, the Italian must give chase and the adversary must fall... good luck boys, win, otherwise crash." where CRASH was synonymous with beheading.

- Raymundo Orsi and Renato Cesarini were celebrating Italy's triumph in the World Cup, in which the former had been an undisputed figure. To celebrate, they decided to rent a plane to go for a ride. When they got on, a third man got on the plane as a Cesarini fan, who had become Cesarini's shadow during the tournament. Cesarini's annoyance was evident. After having made several turns and when they were preparing to land, the aircraft ran out of fuel but the pilot calmly put them on the ground but almost on the water. When they left the plane, they realized that their unexpected companion was missing. Orsi asked Cesarini and he replied: "What Mumo missed. "I saw the guy when they played Spain and almost lost, in the final he came up to me and the Czechs scored. Today I got my revenge, I threw him into the water.

- The Federazione Italiana de Giouco Calcio after the victory obtained over Czechoslovakia wanted to leave a memory for posterity. He called together the members of the winning team, including the substitutes, and invited them to the same stadium where the victory had been achieved for a photo session. Among the memories revived was Orsi's goal, which tied the match. Giovanni Ferrari asked his teammate:

“- Mumo, how did you score that goal? It was sensational! But it still seems impossible to me.”

Orsi took the ball and explained:

“- First I had to avoid Košťálek, who almost brought me down, then I saw Ženíšek coming, whose fame you already know, I made a feint and I fooled him and when Plánička was expecting a shot with his left foot, I shot with my right foot and it went high, into the long corner, a little bit lobbed” and acting with the word, Orsi hit the ball anyway, he wasn’t running, he hadn’t dribbled anyone, he hadn’t made any feint… but the ball went wide, far from the goal. He repeated it up to ten times but he didn’t manage to score a goal in any of them. Orsi angrily kicked the ball towards the centre of the field while exclaiming:

“- Shit about a ball!”

- Attilio Ferraris was a heavy smoker, so knowing him, days before announcing the final list of those called up, Vitorio Pozzo asked him how many cigarettes he smoked a day, to which the player replied:

“- Commentatore, you know that I smoke between 30 and 40 cigarettes a day, not counting those at night.

- Too bad - Pozzo replied - you could win the world title, but it seems that you don't want to. If you stop smoking at least 10 or 15 a day and none at night, I'll take you into account.” Ferraris complied and Pozzo called him up. Years later the player died of a heart attack on a football pitch, during a veterans' match.

- The Dutch were probably the first World Cup team to have their own song, “We're going to Rome” sung by Bob Scholte and Willy Derby, although the Dutch did not go to Rome, only to Como, where they were eliminated.

- During the time of the Republic in Spain, royal titles were abolished, so teams like Real Madrid were renamed FC Madrid, Real Sociedad, Donostia and Real Betis, Betis Balompié, and Oviedo and Espanyol also had to remove the name Real from their names.

- Linesmen worked on different sides of the field in each half.

- The Brazilians tried to register Luiz Luz after the deadline, FIFA rejected the registration so the South Americans threatened to withdraw from the tournament so FIFA agreed to register the Brazilian player.

- As in the previous World Cup, there were many players who were born in a different country than the one they represented: Italy had Luis Monti, Raimundo Orsi, Attilio Demaría, Enrique “Indio” Guaita born in Argentina, Felice Borel born in France and Guarasi born in Brazil, in Spain Ramón Zabalo was born in England; Argentina, Constantino Sosa was born in Paraguay; France to Roger Courtois born in Switzerland and Josef Alcazar and Joseph Gonzales born in Algeria (at that time a French colony); the United States to Julius Hjulian in Sweden, George Moorhouse in England, Walter Dick, James Gallagher and William “Willie” McLean in Scotland, Herman Rapp in Germany and Werner “Scotty” Nilsen in Norway; finally the Romanian Stanislau Konrad born in Poland.

- There was a match for third place for the first time

- The only World Cup in which there was no defending champion Uruguay

Squads

A maximum of 22 players per team were allowed to be registered before May 15, after this date it was not possible to make changes to the rosters (but FIFA allowed Italy to replace one of its goalkeepers, as well as Brazil to add one more player). FIFA paid for the transfer of 17 players for each team. By 1934 there had been a breakthrough in professional football at a global level since Austria, Czechoslovakia, France, Hungary, Italy, Romania and Spain had professionalized their leagues while Argentina and Brazil had professional leagues but were not affiliated with their federations so their players were not eligible for their selection, the professional league of the United States had disappeared in 1931, the other teams maintained their amateur status. There were only two players who played in foreign clubs for this World Cup, in addition many players who played in second division teams were called up.

  - Luiz Luz was added after the deadline.

Botafogo played in the Carioca AMEA League, Americano played in the Citadino League, São Paulo, Palestra Itália and Ypiranga played in the Paulista APEA League, and Vasco da Gama played in the Carioca LCF League.

The Carioca LCF, Paulista APEA, and Citadino leagues were not part of the CBF, which was the FIFA-affiliated governing body, so their players were contracted by the CBF in order to be eligible for the tournament.
