World Cup Stories: Sweden 1958

For the first time, the World Cup would be played without its founder, Jules Rimet, who had died in Paris in 1956, further infusing world football with mourning for the loss of Rodolphe W. Seeldrayers and Henry Delaunay at the end of 1955.

For this edition, a deadline of March 31, 1956, was given for the various federations to send their entries, which this time exceeded fifty. Notable among these entries was the Soviet Union, participating for the first time since its affiliation with FIFA in 1946, and Argentina, which had been absent since 1934. The preliminary phase draw was held on April 27, 1957, in Zurich, Switzerland. The main peculiarity of the draw was that, for the first time, the four British federations were not included in the same group.

The knockout stage produced a number of surprises, including the eliminations of Spain, Uruguay, and Italy. The Spanish side, who dominated European club competitions, had a strong squad featuring players such as Gento, Luis Suárez, Di Stéfano, and Kubala. They had a disastrous first round of qualifying, drawing with Switzerland in Madrid and losing to Scotland in Glasgow. It was the draw against the Swiss that ultimately eliminated them from the tournament, as the Scots had defeated the Swiss both times they met.

The Uruguayans were eliminated by Paraguay, who defeated them 5-0 in Asunción. Although they defeated the Guaraníes in the return match in Montevideo, a 1-1 draw with Colombia on Matchday 1 eliminated them. The elimination of Italy, another strong club side that also had Schiaffino and Ghiggia, was rather curious. The Azzurri had traveled to Belfast to play the match against Northern Ireland, but because the match referee, Hungarian Zsolt, was stranded at London airport due to fog, the Italians refused to allow the match, which was scheduled to be officiated by a local referee, to count toward qualification. Both federations agreed that the match would be solely a friendly, a definition they fell far short of, as the game was characterized by serious fouls and became known as the "Battle of Belfast." The Northern Irish crowd, who had come to the match conditioned by accusations in the Irish press that the Italians were using stimulants, turned on the Azzurri from the outset upon learning of the nature of the match. At the end of the match, the crowd invaded the pitch, and matters were not made worse by the swift action of Northern Ireland captain Danny Blanchflower, who ordered his teammates to escort the Italians to the locker room. The match ended in a 2-2 draw, which would have given Italy qualification. A month later, the official match, coached by Zsolt, was held. The Italians lost 2-1, allowing Northern Ireland to qualify for the World Cup. The Northern Irish team's preparation was divided into three stages: a squad call-up to Belfast and 15 days of training for players playing in the local league, followed by a trip to London, where manager Peter Doherty joined the players before departing for Sweden, where the players playing abroad met up, holding their training camp in Tylösand.

Austria and France gave their group rivals no chance, conceding only a draw, the same one after they had already qualified.

Unfortunately for England, shortly after qualifying, Manchester United, a team that dominated the English league and was making a strong run in the European Cup and the home of the national team, suffered a plane crash. The plane returning from a match against Yugoslavia's Crvena Zvezda crashed in Munich as it attempted to take off in a snowstorm. Twenty-three people died, including eight players, including Roger Byrne, Tommy Taylor, and Duncan Edwards, the latter one of English football's most promising young players. The accident also affected other national teams, such as Northern Ireland, which lost Jackie Blanchflower, Danny's brother, who never recovered from his injuries. Their first-choice goalkeeper, Harry Gregg, slept little due to nightmares caused by the accident.

The Soviet Union, for its part, had decided to participate, this time encouraged by its triumph in the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Tournament and the performances of its main clubs, Spartak and Dynamo Moscow. The Soviets, who were overwhelming favorites to win their group, only earned their ticket to Sweden after a playoff match against the Poles, with whom they had finished level on points. Once England had qualified, the Soviets traveled to China in February 1958, where they played several warm-up matches against local clubs. In May, they regrouped to play the final friendlies before arriving in Stockholm on June 1.

Hungary was far from the marvelous team of four years before. In October 1956, Soviet troops marched on Budapest. The best players who were touring with their clubs at the time did not return to the country; only Grosics, Bozsik, and Hidegkuti remained with the team. Even so, they were still able to qualify despite losing 2-1 to modest Norway in Oslo. Israel, for its part, had qualified from the Asian and African group without playing a single match because all its opponents decided not to play them for political reasons. But FIFA, citing tournament regulations, which stated that no country could qualify without playing a match, solved the problem by drawing lots among the second-place finishers in the European zone. The fate of Wales fell to them, and they took advantage of this new opportunity and defeated the Israelis to secure their qualification.

In South America, in addition to Uruguay's elimination, Brazil qualified after facing stiff resistance from Peru in both matches they played. Meanwhile, the 1955 and 1957 Copa América champions, Argentina, won their group, losing only one match against Bolivia at altitude in La Paz.

Once the Paraguayans qualified, they worked hard to organize everything related to the team's preparation. They traveled to Minas Gerais to play a couple of friendly matches against Brazil. Before that, the Paraguayans had lost two of their key players, the Jara Saguier brothers, who had decided not to participate in solidarity with their Cerro Porteño teammates, who were on strike.

In the North American group, Mexico once again won the North and Central American group after defeating Canada and the United States in the first round and subsequently defeating Costa Rica in the decisive matches. They arrived in Stockholm on May 30 and stayed at the Bromma Hotel, having previously completed a preparation tour of Canada and Portugal.

The draw for the 16 qualifiers took place in Stockholm on February 8, 1958, and FIFA organized the seeded teams by family. The Latin American group consisted of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Mexico; the British group consisted of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland; the Eastern European group comprised the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Yugoslavia; and finally, the Western European group comprised West Germany, France, Austria, and Sweden.

In the tournament, Brazil, with its attacking style of football, won its first title in its history by defeating Sweden in the final. The emergence of a 17-year-old boy known as Pelé left the world speechless. Sweden's success at the World Cup was mainly due to the fact that they finally accepted professional players who played abroad and were called up to bolster the team, enough to reach the final. France was rewarded by finishing third, defeating Germany in a match in which Fontaine scored four goals, setting a record for a World Cup top scorer with thirteen goals in a single edition. The biggest disappointment was undoubtedly Argentina, whose players' association had prohibited the National Federation from calling up players who had joined foreign clubs. Furthermore, in Europe, Roberto Zárate was injured and replaced by the veteran Ángel Labruna. Confident after their successes in South America, they arrived ill-prepared and dedicated their time in Sweden more to women than to football. The Gauchos managed just one victory, against Northern Ireland, and lost the other two to Germany and Czechoslovakia, the latter with an embarrassing 6-1 defeat. This defeat was not well received by the Argentine fans, who greeted the team upon their return to the country with a shower of rotten fruit.

The sixth edition of the World Cup was awarded to Sweden at the 1950 Rio de Janeiro Congress and confirmed during the 1954 tournament, despite protests from South American delegates who demanded that the alternation of tournaments between Europe and Latin America be respected. Sweden's healthy economic situation was undoubtedly the determining factor in FIFA's decision, which sought to give the tournament a definitive start.

FUN FACTS AND OTHER INTERESTING FACTS

- For this World Cup, a brown, almost orange, ball was used, with the characteristic T-shaped segments.

 - When presenting the team's roster, the Brazilian authorities limited themselves to sending only the list with the players' names and did not assign numbers to any of them. This task fell to FIFA, which randomly assigned a number to each player, with number 10 going to Pelé. Otherwise, it would have been impossible for him to wear that number before the World Cup, as he was only a substitute.

 - Nilton Santos, left-back for Brazil and Botafogo, recommended to the club's directors that they sign Garrincha after Mané's first training session with the club. Santos would say, "He gave me the slip. I asked to be signed and put in the starting lineup. I never wanted to face him again."

 - Regarding Garrincha, Just Fontaine would later say, "We knew Garrincha, he was terrifying, and we—Robert Jonquet in particular—had studied his dribbles, or rather, his classic dribble: a feint or double feint, starting inside, exploding, and rocketing out to the outside. Unstoppable... but Jonquet was prepared and would wait for him on the outside. Three times Garrincha faced Jonquet in the first 15 minutes... three times Garrincha passed inside."

 - Garrincha had bought a radio, and upon his return to training camp, Mario Américo, the team's masseur, taking advantage of Mané's lack of education, told him: "That device won't work in Brazil; it only speaks Swedish, and everyone will laugh at you." The striker asked him what he could do, to which Américo replied: "Easy, you sell it to me... I don't care if they laugh at me, I'm not as important as you." Garrincha, convinced he was getting a good deal, made a deal with the masseur, selling him the radio for less than half of what he had paid for it, on the condition that Américo not tell anyone about what had happened.

- After missing a clear goal against England, Brazilian striker Altafini had a nervous breakdown and began to cry and scream. Bellini, the team captain, tired of the player's immaturity, slapped him, which brought the player back to his senses.

 - English referee Arthur Ellis played a key role in the Czechs' elimination from this World Cup, validating a goal by German Rahn, who never crossed the goal line during the match between the two teams, resulting in a 2-2 draw. This forced the Czechoslovakians to play a playoff against Northern Ireland, and the Northern Irish eliminated them.

 - Brazil faced France in the semifinals of the tournament. The French were the top-scoring team but were unable to contain the Brazilians, who ultimately thrashed them. Griffiths, the referee of the match, said of the match: "I was delighted with what I saw. I'll never forget Didí, Garrincha, or Pelé. They weren't human."

- Upon their return to their homeland, the Argentine team was greeted with insults, criticism, and projectiles. Regarding this event, Carrizo, the goalkeeper who endured six goals from the Czechoslovakians, recalled being shouted at: "Sellout and traitor." The plane carrying the national team had to land on a farm in Monte Grande to avoid the fury of the fans waiting at Ezeiza Airport falling upon them.

- This World Cup saw the first goalless draw in World Cup history.

 - It was the only World Cup in which all four British associations participated.

 - After qualifying for the World Cup, Northern Ireland was on the verge of withdrawing when it discovered it would have to play matches on Sundays. In this predominantly Protestant nation, physical activity is completely prohibited on Sundays. But finally, on March 13, at a meeting between representatives of the Irish Football Association and various churches, an exception was agreed upon that would allow players to play on Sundays during the World Cup.

- After the Manchester United crash, goalkeeper Harry Gregg felt unable to fly again and so he traveled to Sweden by train.

- The brothers who participated in this World Cup were Yugoslavians Milos Milutinovic and Milorad Milutinovic, Welshmen Ivor Allchurch and Len Allchurch, Mel Charles and John Charles, Paraguayans Eliseo Insfran and Eligio Insfran, Juan Lezcano and Claudio Lezcano and Austrians Paul Kozlicek and Ernest Kozlicek.

- Among the players who were sidelined due to injury before the World Cup were Mexican Héctor Hernández (Gold), Argentine Roberto Zárate (River Plate), Rogelio Bedoya (Libertad) for Paraguay, Swedes Torbjörn Jonsson (IFK) and Jan Ekström (Malmo), Scots Tommy Ewing (Partick Thistle), and Frenchman René Bliard (Stade Reims).

 - Among the players who participated in the World Cup representing a country other than their birth were the following:

Austria: Walter Schleger, born in Czechoslovakia

France: Just Fontaine (Morocco)

Scotland: John Hewie (South Africa)

Mexico: Jorge Romo (Cuba) and Carlos Blanco (Spain).

SWEDEN 1958 GAME BY GAME

For the tournament, a group system was organized for the first round, from which the best first-place teams from each group (4 in total) would be selected. In the event of a tie in points, the teams would have to play a playoff match without considering goal difference.

Squads

As with the previous World Cup, each national team had to submit a list of 40 players a month before the registration deadline, from which the final 22 were selected. Once registration closed, no changes could be made to the rosters. For this World Cup, the only amateur teams were Germany and Sweden, along with the Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, and Yugoslavia, although the latter were questionable. The only countries that did not yet have a unified national league were Germany and Brazil. The number of players playing in foreign leagues also increased, and there were a significant number of players from second and even third division teams.
